When Joe Burrows was sentenced to death for the brutal murder of an elderly Illinois farmer, he asked me -- a young reporter covering my first murder trial -- to help tell his story. This non-fiction narrative is a harrowing account of murder, betrayal, and of a femme fatale's wrongful accusation that put two innocent men behind bars, one of them on Illinois' infamous Death Row. It was never my intent to prove that Burrows was innocent of murder. Rather, it was to uncover the truth, or close to it at least. After finishing this book and forming their own opinion, readers may want to ask themselves this question -- "What was I doing three days ago, and who could I get to back my alibi?"

TRUE CRIME BOOK REVIEWS Innocent with a Death Row address

"Former staff reporter for The News Gazette Peter Rooney reported on this case in his early journalism days and followed it until its very end – the exoneration of a innocent man.

Rooney makes it clear that his book Die Free isn’t an argument against the Death penalty, but simply another example of why such an extreme punishment should re-evaluated. His points are made clearly and with merit as he details obvious evidence withholding by an over-aggressive district attorney, threats and intimidation of a borderline mentally challenged man, and the old school thoughts of little women versus big, burly men."

If you’re looking for an interesting, thought-provoking true crime quick read, consider Die Free by Peter Rooney."

AMHERST DAILY BULLETIN Justice gone awry Amherst author's death-row story makes a case against the death penalty

"When he was 24 and had just a couple of years on the job as a journalist, Peter Rooney was given a critical assignment cover a murder trial. It was, he recalls, both "exciting and intimidating," the first time he'd ever handled a story of that magnitude.

But the experience - chronicling the murder of an elderly Illinois farmer in east-central Illinois in 1988 - would ultimately lead him to witness much more the wrongful conviction of an innocent man, the man's sentencing to death row, and finally his exoneration, all of which would go on to capture the attention of the national media."

THE NEWS-GAZETTE Book tells story of framed Villa Grove man

"The true and sad story of man framed for murder in Iroquois County is now a book, told by the reporter who knows the story best.

Peter Rooney, now an administrator at Amherst College, was a 24-year-old News-Gazette reporter when an ill-educated minor criminal told him he was being set up for the murder of an elderly Iroquois County man, William Dulin.

Rooney followed the story for years and was the first to get a recantation from an important witness for the prosecution.

With a clear style and the closest knowledge of the case, Rooney unravels the complicated story of how a high school dropout, career minor criminal and admitted drug user came to face the death penalty."

Why would a reporter named Peter Rooney go to bat for a man name Joe Burrows. This man was on death row. For sure, we know Rooney has a heart!!! He spent time, money and got a lot of scrutiny for his efforts. This man got the story and deserves a metal of honor. Will he get a metal of honor? Maybe not, but he gets my vote and a 5 Star rating from this reader.

First, I was intrigued by the title. I was captivated by the story; how an innocent man is found guilty and sent to death row... and how by some miracle from God that he is released and became a free man. I got this book as a free download but it would be a worthwhile read even if it cost money. Too bad that we have innocent people in prison let alone on death row... at least in this case we have a happy ending.
This is a book that I feel is a very well written book by Mr. Rooney. He played a big role in Mr. Burrows being freed from death row. It's sad that things like this actually happen in our justice system. I for one believe that the system works only for certain people. I feel for the people that have suffered by the miscarriages of Justice, such as Mr. Burrows.
As a fan of true stories, I truly recommend this book.
A true story with a happy ending. Peter Rooney did Avery good job reporting the facts of this case. It's sad that our justice system allows an innocent person be sentenced to death. It happens way to often. In the county I live in another man was convicted of a murder he did not commit he was not even in the state! Michelle Lawless was killed in Benton, Missouri, Josh Kezer. Spent 16 years in prison because of an over zealous sheriff and dishonest witnesses. Kudos to all who help these unfortunate people.
I found this a great read and since most of my relatives are from downstate IL, I knew the area well. I was not familiar with this case but I found it compelling to read. It also makes me wonder how many innocent men have been sent to death row and how accurate our criminal justice system really is. If someone can lie about another person's where abouts and get them convicted of a crime they didn't commit, it could happen to anyone; not just Joe Burrows. It's a scary world out there - especially when you could be the one who's rights are taken away from you!
details the mistakes that ultimately convicted the wrong man for murder and sent him to death row. The book has a great deal to cover--many issues, many characters. The writer does a great job with organizing and clarifying a huge amount of material.
The book is captivating. And insightful, enlightening us that mistakes are made, people. lie even in court, and serious consequences are often the result. We must not be too quick to judge, even in the dilemmas of our ordinary day-to-day lives..
Peter Rooney's true story about a creepy cast of characters told from the point of view of a young reporter (the real Peter Rooney) is a page turner. He is able to lay out the real facts of this gruesome murder and ensuing death sentence in a very compelling way. It's all there- incompetent small town law enforcement, petty criminals, liars, heroes, etc...For me, the most interesting aspect of the book was the young reporter himself; you really experience the story through his curious eyes. If I were a movie producer, I would option this book and make a movie, hmmm who would I cast as the dashing young reporter?
It is extremely well documented. The author does an excellent job in portraying the facts. Not only about the story but in its human and humane perspectives. Yet in reality we all need to be informed. The sad thing is once we are we don't take actions. Because this story could very well happen to any any single one of us.
